senzยฐ is the brainchild of Gerwin Hoogendoorn, then an Industrial Design student. After a week in which he saw three umbrellas destroyed during severe weather, he decided to dedicate his graduation project to the perfect umbrella: an umbrella that can withstand the forces of nature, especially the wind. And he succeeded! 3,400 years after the invention of the umbrella in ancient Egypt, there is a new generation of umbrellas!
senzยฐ saw the light of day
Gerwin came up with some very clever solutions and realized he had gold in his hands with his invention. Then it wasn’t difficult to convince Gerard and Philip. A business plan soon followed and the first prototype was made, on Gerwin’s grandmother’s sewing machine! They decided to go for it. Without any entrepreneurial experience, they rented a small office space and started their business. Thus senzยฐ saw the light of day – with the name in English literally referring to the desire that senzยฐ umbrellas make sense!
The success…
About a year later, in November 2006, they launched senzยฐ. Not knowing how many umbrellas would be needed for a successful launch, they started with 10,000 units. Due to overwhelming international media coverage – from TV, radio, magazines, newspapers and blogs – the stock was completely sold out within nine days!
The first year was a resounding success. senzยฐ was on the map almost immediately, in part because it won almost every major design award – red dot design award, iF design award (Gold), IDSA award (Gold), Good Design Award, Observer Design Award (Star), Dutch Design Award -, and so on. Since then, senzยฐ has grown tremendously. The company now operates in Western Europe, North America and Asia. senzยฐ is working hard with a great team to become a global brand.
