Why the resume is a poor predictor of success

Get a better handle on the success of new hires (hint: the resume doesn't tell everything!)

Did you know that the information contained on a candidate’s resume predicts success by only 10%? While in the recruitment of new people, the CV still plays the leading role! High time for a more effective approach.

The qualities that 90% predict the success of your new team member are (among others) personality, emotional intelligence and motivation. According to the National Soft Skills Association (2023), these factors are critical to a team member’s success and effectiveness. All characteristics that you cannot readily glean from a resume.

A study published by Harvard Business Review confirms that soft skills such as adaptability, problem-solving and interpersonal skills are all-important for success in your job.

Yet many candidates do not get past the threshold of reviewing the resume. If the match on paper is not 100%, the interview is usually not initiated. As a result, you are missing out on an awful lot of potential top colleagues.

Because imagine this: a candidate does not have the exact work experience you are looking for, but is determined to learn and grow within your company. By looking beyond the resume and focusing on potential and personality, you increase your chances of recruiting a successful employee. Someone who will not only develop the required skills, but also enhance the company culture and contribute to a positive work environment.

After all, it’s about understanding how a candidate fits into the company culture and how the person will thrive on a specific team. This requires valuing both hard skills and soft skills.
