Next Generation Social Media

Incumbents stick mostly to traditional social channels like Facebook and Twitter while you should be using Snapchat and Instagram to reach millennials. But how do you do that?

That’s what Tim van der Wiel came to tell us. Tim is not just anyone. 6 years ago he discovered the power of Twitter at age 13 with a reach of over 1 million young people. At 19, he co-founded the company GoSpooky, Forbes gave him a spot in their “30 Under 30” list, won the SAN New Kids on the Block Accent with GoSpooky and was recently voted a Marketing Hero by Adformatie.

Using Snapchat and Instagram correctly was the common thread of Tim’s inspiring story. If you haven’t caught the attention of your target audience within a second, you’re actually already too late. Tim took the attendees into the world of Snapchat and Instagram. What exactly is it? What are the differences? That the average age of the audience was a lot higher and not everyone was familiar with these new media became painfully clear at times but that didn’t stop Tim from giving great examples from KLM, HEMA and ING, among others.

But how can you use Snapchat and Instagram successfully? What really contributes to success? According to Tim, it’s ultimately all about creating attention and telling the right story that seamlessly matches the interests of the target audience and also engaging that audience in spreading your brand by having them use geofilters that are custom created by the company, among other things.

After the break, we put his tips into practice. And then it turns out that the old lessons of marketing also apply to new media like Snapchat and Instagram. Only now we know a little better how to do this. Can we as marketers do this very well ourselves? It remains difficult to do this well. For that expertise, we may have to turn to Tim and his company GoSpooky.

What became very clear during this session is that Topmarketeers Network has a current added value for all those marketers who want to stay abreast of the lightning-fast developments happening within the field!

Hope to see you at the next TMN session on Feb. 12!

I could have done worse as an office dog, because there is a park and forest near the monastery. During the lunch walk I coach the team based on my motto “from relaxation the best results are achieved. And afterwards I lounge under the conference table again.
